Excelsiors vs Machen Ends in a Knock Down, Drag Out Abandonment

Chaos reigns at the Jim Owen, as the first game after Barney’s passing ended unceremoniously with the referee abandoning play as the boys were 2-0 up against the visitors.

Following a minutes applause for our fallen comrades, a quick one-two punch of Tom Calver and Luke Lewis got the Excelsiors into a comfortable lead against a very game AFC Machen, who were all guns blazing right from the off. With tensions flaring and tackles flying with little hesitation, things erupted into an all out brawl on our home turf and despite the substitution of Excelsiors Captain, Brett Morgan, Machen would not be denied their fight as they again pursued a scrap and bitter-fuelled tackles.

With the referee losing control of the game, Machen decided enough was enough and left the pitch, even though the 1sts attempted to continue play. The official then decided to call time on the game at just over 70 minutes played, with the outcome now being up in the air until the referee and the league decide what ruling shall stand.

The Great British Summertime Arrives…

Indeed, those fabled stories of sunny days and BBQ weather in August must be just that: stories. Unfortunately, rainfall has claimed it’s first victim on the game calendar with the cancellation of our final pre-season fixture against Merthyr team Quar Park Rangers coming as a result of too much surface water deeming the pitch unplayable.

To say we’re gutted is an understatement. We were very much looking forward to hosting the lads for some midweek fun after the original fixture date was amended and this really has spoilt our evening. Apologies to both the QPR lads (on behalf of the weather and the fact due to time constraints we can’t re-arrange before the start of our respective seasons) and to those fans who were planning on attending the game, rain or shine! We’ll see you very soon at the start of the season.

Pontlottyn Take A Punt…

Today’s first pre-season game will still kick off at 12:30pm, it’ll still be held at the 3G pitch at Abertillery however, it’ll no longer feature Malpas United as our opponents. Unfortunately, the Newport-based ‘Boilermakers’ had to drop out of today’s game but alas all is not lost: Pontlottyn AFC has stepped up.

We look forward to hosting Pontlottyn today as we kick off our pre-season fixtures!
